"This month's salary payment has been cancelled; your job has been fully automated."
How seriously do you take this scenario? Is this just an exaggerated doomsday scenario, or a preview of the world we're heading toward?
In this article, I don't just want to ask: "Will AI replace humans or not?" The more precise question is: If AI can replace us, what do we do with ourselves?
To arrive at this question, we'll examine at least ten different theories and perspectives from philosophers, economists, and AI researchers – theories where some say "Yes, jobs will disappear," others say "No, only the form of work changes," and some even warn: "Humanity itself might be removed from the stage."
Why Has This Question Become So Urgent Now?
In the past two to three years, large language models, image and video generation systems, and intelligent robots have blurred the line between "human work" and "machine work." Tasks like translation, writing advertising copy, programming, initial design, diagnosing diseases from medical images, and even music composition are no longer exclusively human.
This situation has led experts from various fields – from philosophy to economics and computer science – to draw very different scenarios for the "future of work" and the "future of humanity itself." In what follows, we'll review ten important narratives, and then you must reckon with yourself: Which picture is closer to reality, and if that scenario occurs, where is your place in it?
1. The Theory of "Superintelligence and the End of Humanity" – Nick Bostrom
Nick Bostrom, Swedish philosopher and founder of the "Future of Humanity Institute" at Oxford, argues in his famous book Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies[1] that if a system becomes more intelligent than humans in most cognitive dimensions, it might not only take over jobs but also control over humanity's destiny. He speaks of the "control problem": How do we control something that is much more intelligent than us?
In a more recent note, Bostrom also speculates that in the future, "most conscious minds will be digital"[2], which means that the majority of "intelligent agents" may no longer be biological humans.
The implicit message of this theory:
If one day artificial superintelligence emerges and we haven't solved the control problem, the topic of "job loss" becomes a small issue; then we must ask: "Will humanity itself survive?"
If you knew there was a small probability that superintelligence could effectively eliminate humanity, would you be willing to accept this risk to benefit from its enormous advantages (curing diseases, solving the climate crisis, etc.)?
2. The Theory of "A World Without Work" – Daniel Susskind
Daniel Susskind, Oxford economist, says in his book A World Without Work[3]: This time the technology story is different from the past. AI advances are causing machines to perform not only manual work but also complex cognitive tasks better and cheaper. As a result, we're gradually entering an "age without work" – an era where the shortage of human work is the main problem, not the shortage of technology.
Susskind warns that this situation creates three major problems:
- Inequality – Income and power become concentrated in the hands of capital owners and owners of AI systems[4]
- Political power – Those who control technology also control politics
- Meaning – When wage work is no longer the center of life, where do people derive their life's meaning?
However, he doesn't paint a black scenario; he suggests that governments move toward guaranteed income, redefinition of the welfare system, and creating ways to find meaning outside of wage work. But the human at the center of the work economy is no longer the same as before.
If one day it's truly not necessary to "work to survive," can we then be alone with ourselves?
3. The Theory of "The Second Machine Age" – Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee
In their book The Second Machine Age[5], Brynjolfsson and McAfee say: The digital revolution – especially AI – is the second machine age. This time, machines aren't just replacing our muscles but are also approaching our brains. In many cognitive tasks, humans and machines are becoming substitutes rather than complements.
However, these two are more optimistic than Susskind. They believe that if we modernize educational institutions, legislation, and tax systems, we can derive increased prosperity and productivity from this age – albeit with the serious risk of increasing inequality.
If society's overall productivity increases but the middle class is destroyed, can we call that "progress"?
4. The Theory of "Bad Automation and Anti-Human AI" – Daron Acemoglu
Daron Acemoglu, MIT economist, has been working for years on the impact of automation on wages and labor inequality. He distinguishes between two types of automation:
Good automation: Increases productivity while simultaneously creating new, value-adding tasks for workers.
"So-so automation": Displaces workers but doesn't increase productivity enough to compensate for this displacement[6].
In recent reports and speeches, he warns that if AI is primarily designed to replace human work – not to assist it – the result will be "declining wage growth, greater inequality, and weakening of democracy." He defends a "pro-human agenda for AI"[7]: meaning directing policies and investments toward systems that empower workers, not make them obsolete.
It's not just about "technological progress"; the type of applications that companies, governments, and even we users encourage determines whether AI "takes our place" or "remains in our service."
5. The Theory "Why Are There Still So Many Jobs?" – David Autor
David Autor, one of the most important labor market economists, shows in his famous article "Why Are There Still So Many Jobs?"[8] that over the past two centuries, automation has always done two things simultaneously: It has replaced labor and complemented it at the same time. That is, some tasks have been completely mechanized, but this has led to the creation of new jobs that wouldn't have existed at all without that technology.
He argues that machines are excellent at routine and codable tasks, but humans still have an advantage in solving open problems, social interaction, creativity, and judgment with human context. In this view, AI is not the job killer but the job redesigner.
If new jobs are indeed created, what guarantee is there that your skills will be useful in those new jobs?
The future of work isn't just about the "existence of jobs"; it's also about your place in them.
6. The Theory of "The Decline of Professions" – Richard and Daniel Susskind
Richard and Daniel Susskind focus in their book The Future of the Professions[9] on specialized professions such as law, medicine, accounting, and higher education. They envision two futures:
- A "calm and gradual" future where technology makes professional work more efficient
- A "transformative" future where technological systems gradually push the professions themselves to the margins, and specialized humans lose their current role
Their message is sharp: In a society where digital access to knowledge and advice exists, "we no longer want professionals to work like in the 20th century"[10].
Is your job "information and standardizable routines" – which sooner or later will be automated more cheaply and quickly – or "human judgment in ambiguous situations" that's harder to replace?
7. The Theory "Great Good, Great Danger" – Geoffrey Hinton
Geoffrey Hinton, known as the "Godfather of AI," was himself one of the main architects of deep neural networks; but he now belongs to the figures who point to both the enormous benefit and the serious danger of these systems.
Hinton has recently warned:
- AI can surpass humans in many tasks and lead to widespread unemployment and exacerbated inequality[11]
- The main danger isn't just the "killer robot"; but the power of these systems to manipulate human emotions and behavior – which can be devastating for advertising, politics, and information warfare[12]
At the same time, he has repeatedly said that AI can work wonders for medicine and education; but if politics and economics aren't reformed, the natural result is that "a few become much richer and most people become poorer."
If algorithms shape not only your work but also your feelings, your vote, and your relationships, at what moment can you say: "This is still me making the choice"?
8. The Theory "AI is the Electricity of the 21st Century" – Andrew Ng
Andrew Ng, prominent machine learning researcher, has repeatedly said: "AI is the new electricity"[13]. Just as electricity transformed almost every industry, AI will penetrate every industry.
In this view, AI isn't necessarily the "enemy of jobs"; rather, it's the foundation of the next generation of businesses. Ng emphasizes several points:
- The greatest value comes from the combination of Human + AI, not complete substitution
- Society must invest in education, retraining, and designing processes that keep humans in the loop, not exclude them[14]
If AI is the "new electricity," do you want to wire in the new world or just be a consumer whose fuse could blow at any moment?
9. The Theory "Coexistence and Skepticism Toward Catastrophe" – Yann LeCun
Yann LeCun, Turing Prize winner and AI chief at Meta, is one of the sharpest critics of apocalyptic narratives about AI. He repeats several important points[15]:
- Achieving "general intelligence" similar to humans requires fundamental advances beyond current language models; therefore, fear of near superintelligence is exaggerated
- Even if we create extraordinary intelligence, these systems inherently have no drive for self-preservation or domination; these are science fiction imaginations, not the inevitable outcome of engineering
He emphasizes that humans will remain the "bosses" of AI, and the main concern should be the concentration of power in a few companies and governments, as well as poor system design, not "robot rebellion"[16].
"Who will use AI to take the place of other humans?" – Politicians, monopolies, or empowered citizens?
10. The Theory of "Robotic Realism" – Rodney Brooks
Rodney Brooks, robotics pioneer and founder of iRobot, has been warning for years against two extremes: We should neither think "nothing changes" nor that "soon half of all jobs will disappear." In various articles and interviews, he shows that the world is full of details where robots are still very weak: from the delicacy of the human hand to contextual understanding of real situations[17].
Brooks says when we say "robots are taking jobs," we often underestimate human capabilities and ignore the complexity of the real environment. For him, the near future looks more like a world where humans and robots work side by side and "humans in the loop" are still necessary, especially in physical environments and practical work.
It might lull us into false security; so that as long as we don't see a robot on the street, we think no serious change has occurred, while perhaps on digital layers, many desk and cognitive tasks are already being redesigned right now.
So... Will AI Replace Humans?
If you place these ten theories side by side, the simple picture of "yes" or "no" completely collapses:
- Bostrom and some pessimists say: Perhaps not only jobs, but humanity itself is in danger
- The Susskinds say: Wage work might be pushed to the margins; we must prepare for a world without work
- Acemoglu and Autor warn: The direction of policy and technology design determines whether AI strengthens us or makes us obsolete
- Hinton, Ng, LeCun, and Brooks each see a mix of danger and opportunity – from apocalypse to long-term coexistence
If we want an honest summary, it might be this:
AI will almost certainly replace many repetitive, routine, and rule-based tasks – whether mental or manual.
For a large part of people, the meaning of "work" will change: from executing work to designing systems, oversight, human interaction, creativity, and decision-making under ambiguous conditions.
Whether humans are "pushed to the margins" or "enter a new center" depends on our collective and individual choices.
Here the Ball Is in Your Court
After all these discussions, the key question for you is no longer:
"Will AI replace humans?"
but rather:
"In which of the scenarios we've reviewed do you want to live, and what are you doing today to increase the chances of being in that world?"
- What kind of policies do we accept?
- What kind of companies do we encourage?
- And most importantly: What kind of skills, human networks, and social role do we create for ourselves?
If you're a proponent of the "Second Machine Age and AI as new electricity," what's your plan for learning and coexisting with this "electricity"?
If you fear the dark scenarios of Bostrom and Hinton, what role do you play at the citizen or professional level in ethical, legal, and political AI debates?
Perhaps the final answer is this:
AI alone is neither our savior nor our killer.
But it can be a very large mirror that multiplies our weaknesses, greeds, fears, and hopes.
The final question I want to leave in your mind is this:
If tomorrow morning AI could do 80% of the work you do today better,
what would you prefer the remaining 20% to be?
And what are you doing from today to build that 20%?
